Uh, are you sure? Double check that. 

On all NetBSD systems I've used (including a few 1.5 boxes here) the
mail that is en-route is saved in /var/spool/mqueue and the mail that
has been received and put into user mailboxes goes in /var/mail.

Do not make a symlink from one directory to the other.
