I replaced the /usr/pkg/emul with a copy from my 1.4.2 system and Applix
worked - but Netscape did not. ;-)

Then I put the "new" emul back, pkg_delete'd Netscape and the SUSE libs,
put the "old" emul in there and reinstalled Netscape.  Now both Applix
and Netscape work.  I still don't know how to make Applix work without
using the old emul tree, though..
