I had this very same problem with 1.4.2 on a different machine than I am
currently using, and probably for different reasons, but I accidentally
discovered that changing my processor speed setting in the BIOS to the WRONG
speed of 200mhz (instead of 266, like it really is) fixed it. I haven't a
clue why, and I don't have that machine anymore to test it with.
