1.4 was not a good release. The release date was based on being
available for a conference, not on when the code was ready. I
think the lesson has been learned.
I am running 1.5_ALPHA2 on a couple of servers and my laptop here
and it has proved much superior to 1.4.2 all round, particularly
with soft dependencies enabled.
