Hi,

I have no experiences with 1U systems, but recently I found an announcement 
at http://www.macase.com.tw/main.htm for a 2U system, KI-P03, that should 
work with any micro ATX mobo.

I kind of like that solution, it gives me the option to use and replace the 
systemboard without being tied to a specific vendor. There are a lot of micro 
ATX boards around with a variety of CPU and on board peripherals to choose 
from and the case seems to have 2 PCI slots available to expand components 
not integrated to the mobo.
