I've recently been seeing the following messages in my /var/log/authlog file:

Mar 28 19:24:46 labyrinth inetd[274]: connection from mail.cc.trincoll.edu, serv
ice auth (tcp)
Mar 28 19:24:52 labyrinth inetd[282]: connection from llions0.llion.org, service
 auth (tcp)
Mar 28 19:25:02 labyrinth inetd[286]: connection from tscnet.com, service auth (
tcp)
Mar 28 19:25:16 labyrinth inetd[293]: connection from wilma.widomaker.com, servi
ce auth (tcp)
Mar 28 19:25:28 labyrinth inetd[300]: connection from highlander.cbnet.ns.ca, se
rvice auth (tcp)

What is the service "auth"? Is this something checking against identd? I've
recently enabled it, using a little piece of shell script.

Thanks.
