The same should be true for NetBSD.
You said, you have magicfilters installed, but do you have it enabled in the
entry of your printcap file?
I.e. does it look like:
dj|dj690|lp|line|Deskjet 690C:\
:sh:sd=/var/spool/output/deskjet:\
:lp=/dev/lpa0:\
:lf=/var/log/lpd-errs:\
:mx#10000:\
:if=/usr/pkg/libexec/magicfilter/dj690c-filter:
(This is for my Deskjet 690C printer).
(For the future: It's always very helpfull to quote your configuration files,
you will get more and better help in much shorter time).
