We have some support for devices which comply to the USB Mass Storage
spec, so in theory a USB CD-RW that followed that spec should work or
be close to working.
It is true that we support the Mass Storage spec however, one must also
consider the class and the protocol supported. We support the SCSI class
using Balk transfers. There are a number of classes we do not support and
other protocols. See /sys/dev/usb/umass.c for more information.
[Noting that the USUBCLASS_UFI, the USB floppy disk class would be nice to
have]
In practice, the only USB CD-RW's I've seen used a proprietary
ATAPI<->USB bridge chip, whose manufacturer (In-System Design,
in-system.com) was uninterested in releasing programming information
except under an NDA.
Ya, and that too....
