NetBSD fully supports ATAPI passthrough for those applications which
require it.

I use a Mitsumi CR-4802TE IDE CD-RW drive here (cheap and cheerful; no
coasters yet) with no problems (well, appart from a minor "fixating"
niggle which cdrecord acknowledges as a bug in the Mitsumi firmware, but
which it is able to work-around).
