top says idle as expected. And after the problem of explaining a load of
two while the box is doing nothing, there is the problem of explaining a
load of close to or over six when perhaps playing a mp3, running mutt,
irc and sup.

The funny thing about this is the fact that I noticed that the loads
went up by a factor of two or more after I switched to elf. I know elf
is supposed to be a little slower, but not that much slower.
