No difference either slot.  Taking Manuel Bouyer's suggestion, I copied
/etc/ifconfig.ne2 to .ne0, which did work, but still fails to explain why the
new kernel fixed on ne0.

Of course your're right on this.  I downloaded the source for 1.4 before I
decided to upgrade to 1.4.1 (darned memory lapses).  After I fetch the right
source I'll post back my results.
