Many thanks - I've added an entry to

it should show up in an hour or so.
It mentions the "make COPTS=-O" trick, but concludes with
"Of course, generally the fastest way to compile a kernel on a low
memory machine is to use another machine, or temporarily add some
more memory!" :)
