At first I tried to separate make and cc, but as you expected, that
doesn't change anything one could notice. Switching from '-O2' to '-O'
or nothing at all makes cc1 about half as big as before, and it gives
me the feeling to be faster, but the whole thing still would take many
days, I suppose.
The solution was, to borrow 16M from another machine. I did a 'make
clean' and a 'make' (now with '-O2' again) and two hours later the
thing was finished.
As for the FAQs: the line 'BUY MORE RAM!' should be enough ;-)
