this sounds a lot like the kind of weird problems you can get when
thinnet cables/connectors/terminators aren't quite right.  strange
properties of transmission lines and such.

you might want to try replacing bits of the bnc stuff to see if that
helps, or changing the topology to see if it affects the problem.
