Hm... I could try a snapshot. I'd almost prefer fighting it out with the
source at first, but if all else fails I'll happily try a snapshot. I've
just done a backup this past week, so the absolute worst case doesn't have
me losing a whole lot. :)

I'll go through your instructions (and Jason's) again, see what makes sense
to me, and leap into it.
