Actually setting the variables is what seems to cause problems, although
you'll notice below that su'ing didn't work at all.

Here's what happened when I uncommented those lines from my .kshrc and
re-ran it.

  /home/devin/.kshrc: 41 lines, 1051 characters
  $ reksh

A simple alias that basically does ". /home/devin/.kshrc".

  /usr/bin/whoami: Cannot fork
  /usr/bin/whoami: Cannot fork
  /usr/bin/whoami: Cannot fork

*That's* odd.

  (bofh:devin) /home/devin $ dir

After about a minute or three, the prompt finally comes up the way it
should.

  total 14

  drwxr-xr-x 6 root wheel 512 Nov 5 17:10 ../

  -rw-r--r-- 1 devin staff 618 Nov 6 19:12 .history
  -rw-r--r-- 1 devin staff 1051 Nov 9 18:59 .kshrc
  -rw-r--r-- 1 devin staff 11 Nov 4 06:02 .profile
  (bofh:devin) /home/devin $ cd ..
  (bofh:devin) /home $ cd ..

Works good with keeping the pwd in sync...

  (bofh:devin) / $ su
  Password:
  ${PS1IDSTRING} ${PWD} $ exit

...but su isn't working at all. This may be just a need to stick the
appropriate lines in root's .profile, though.

  (bofh:devin) / $

Back to pseudo-working, although shouldn't my pwd be /home?

I'm confused.
