I don't use DHCP but bootp.

my /etc/bootparams looks like this:
j2.kemper.org root=mail.kemper.org:/usr/export/jam/root

Now, admittedly the root fs and the bootp server reside on the
same machine.  However, I recently renamed the machine and I could
not mount until I changed the root server.

Before:
j2.kemper.org root=newmail.kemper.org:/usr/export/jam/root
after:
j2.kemper.org root=mail.kemper.org:/usr/export/jam/root

I realize bootp is more primative than DHCP, but it works for what
I'm trying to do.

I just got a shiny new WinBook XLi (well, more matte than shiny :) and
wanted to see how well NetBSD ran on it, but I need all the disk space
for Windoze... so, I set up a kernel with NFS root/DHCP configuration
and used dosboot.com to boot it. I managed to figure most of the stuff
out and get it working, but I couldn't figure out how to get it to mount
root from a different machine than the DHCP server. When the kernel
prints the root path, it uses the DHCP server-name as the part before
the colon, and the DHCP root-path option as the part after. However, no
matter what I put for server-name, the kernel mounts from the DHCP
server. Is there any way to get it to do what I want? My DHCP server is
a 386 that's short on disk; now that I've put a copy of a root
filesystem on it, I've only got 165K free.

Everything seems to be working pretty well though... it doesn't see the
sound card (ESS Audiodrive something), and it doesn't like the stupid
Lucent WinModem (I shoulda gotten a PC card modem instead, I guess).
Also, I'm using pcvt, and whenever I enter then exit vi or less or
something like that, it turns num lock back on, which sucks, 'cuz this
being a laptop, there's no separate numeric keypad. numlock makes a
section of the regular keyboard into a keypad...
