Note that the problem can't be the MTU of the link between him and the
Linux machine being to small (unless he is talking to a _very_ broken
system), but must be the MTU between the Linux machine and the ISP or some
other MTU higher in the path. 

If he _lowers_ the MTU between him and the Linux machine to match the MTU
of the link where the problem is, that should also solve the problem.
