You mention in a 2nd message this was with 16550 ports (which are driven by 
the com.c driver).

The com.c was substantially changed for 1.3, both to fix the state
machine and to increase performance.

I guess you should upgrade to 1.3, or to the pending 1.3.1 patch release.
