There _is_ a third choice, actually. Here at turner, we use cucipop
from
ftp://ftp.informatik.rwth-aachen.de/pub/packages/cucipop/
This package is from the makers of procmail, and supports large
mailboxes and large numbers of users much better (in my experience) than
either of the other two. It can run standalone or from inetd, and has a
variety of useful options...
