When I had those kinds of problems with XCalc, it was because X
couldn't find the app-defaults file.  In the past
releases of XFree (prior to 3.1.1 I think) I remember having to 
install the XCalc.ad file by hand because it wasn't in the
../lib/X11/app-defaults dir with the distribution :-(
