Sectors are 512 bytes, blocks are 1024 bytes.
Did you take that into account?

I can't be sure exactly what went wrong since you didn't mail any of
the values you used.

Also don't forget to make a swap partition.  About 16MB will keep you
from running out of memory with X11R6 & gcc & emacs all running at
once.  Less will do for non-X11 systems.  If you don't mind a
performance loss you can set it up to page out of a file instead of a
dedicated partition.
