Sitting down and reading the source. 

Maybe read some books like Kirk McKusick et al's "Design and
Implementation of the 4.4BSD Operating System" and if you want to look at
the network stack start with the Stevens books (TCP/IP Illustrated, vol. 
1-3, see http://www.kohala.com/start/#books).
