Actually, DIAGNOSTIC works fine if you yank the si and sw drivers from
the config file.  [My comments, at least, apply to the sparc; you don't
specify, but the behavior you describe sounds like what I saw there.]
That's what I do; I think DIAGNOSTIC is too useful.
