except for the last attribute (local, crtsdts, mdmbuf) which requires  
ttyflags to be run.

You don't need to recompile the kernel.  That is one (sub-optimal)  
way to do it.  The kernel gets its notion of console from the  
bootblocks.   So you should run installboot and point it at the  
serial port of your dreams.  The kernel will follow.

Sounds like we need a FAQ for this.  Maybe I should do one.
