OK, solved it. After bringing /etc/X11/xinit/ back to the original 
state, I (as root) created .xinitrc in my homedirectory. Again, another 
wm showed up before gnome started. Then I removed .xinitrc and created 
.xinitrc as user. Now all is ok.
