This problem is known, and is fixed in NetBSD-current.  Unfortunately,
the changes are pervasive enough that they will not be pulled up for
NetBSD-3.1 - they'll appear in 4.0, instead.   However, it's easy enough
to either partition the disk into smaller pieces, or run a -current
kernel on the 3.0 userland...
