First off I was surprised to see the mention of NVIDIA graphics cards again.
I thought I was going to post separately -- but I think I'll just ad to this
discussion:

I too have an NVIDIA graphics card -- when I started XFree86 I couldn't make
the cursor move at all! SO I did some googling and ran across a thread star=
ted
by Jakub Misak in netbsd-users/2005/02/14 . I did what he did. I modified my
sysctl.conf by adding the  lines:

  #STUFF to speed up the mouse...
  vm.anonmin=3D10
  vm.anonmax=3D95
  vm.execmin=3D10
  vm.execmax=3D60
  vm.filemin=3D1
  vm.filemax=3D10

Then in ~/.profile add:
   PTHREAD_RRTIME=3D1
   export PTHREAD_RRTIME

Could any of the vm.* vars be adjusted further? My X windows still=20
freeze (especially in morning),
but at least its usable.
