I made progress: discovered that I need moused=3DNO AND wsmoused=3DYES.
I can now make startx -- depth 24 work for both user=3Droot and user=3Dtodd.

Next problem: I have 5 windows defined in .xinitrc, but only 4 show
on the screen. I also noticed that I have 2 ptys.
Is this a pty problem or a ttyE* problem?
