I'm having enough problems just with 1.6.2. (1.5.x was so easy).

Probably has nothing to do with your problem, but maybe ... . In my case
I regularly switch between a 101-key English keyboard and a 106-key Japanese
keyboard. When it comes to the sparc port, there are two more possibilities
(English and Japanese Sun keyboards) if I install from the hardware console
versus serial console. Anyway, once I installed with a 101-key keyboard,
but was using a 106-key keyboard with the terminal emulation software for
telnetting in. While I was intending on sending the character "&" (shift+7),
I was actually sending "'" (same keystroke on the other keyboard). Had me
stumped for days. To check if this could be your problem, just make a
password temporarily using all (only) lower case letters, "a" to "z".

Know your feeling (only about 6 years here). I think it's going to be
a bit bumpy for the next year, but I'm sure it will be worth it. Just
having a native threads library will be good. Hopefully there's been
some improvement in the locale (multibyte utf-8 in cui userland) support.
