If you download a ready-to-use package (maybe from the FTP site), then run
pkg_delete to delete the currently installed version and then run pkg_add
to install the new download.

You could probably use pkg_add -u too. (By the way, I have a custom
"pkg_add -u" that doesn't delete the old package first, just in case it is
essential and you don't want to lose it during reinstall.)

There are other ways too, like using pkgsrc. See http://www.pkgsrc.org/

If you have more specific questions, be sure to ask.
