shuttle makes more than one mode of i386 box. Based on some limited
experience benchamrking one of the older models under netbsd, as long as the
ethernet is supported, the the box should work pretty well. Obviously,
things like bundled SD/MMC/CF/smartmedia card readers will not work. 
Audio is usually something really cheap, e.g. cmedia based, and seems to
work fine. 

The thing that you should check carefully is wether any video
chipset on the motherboard will work with your version of XFree86.
