I installed netbsd on a machine with a Conexant modem: it is a
winmodem. Linux has some support for these software modems (I think
there is a driver for at least one Conexant product), but NetBSD no
software-modem drivers in a release or under development (that I know
of). You could try an external modem (serial, usb, or maybe even
firewire): serial will be virtually guaranteed to work, usb should
work, firewire is a possibility (if anyone makes firewire modems that
is). Very few internal modems are actually real complete modems for the
last few years.
