For historical nit-picking, though your question has already been answered:

NetBSD has always(?) supported IDE CD writers via cdrecord, even though
cdrecord's own author (at least in the early days) claimed that his software
wouldn't work with anything but SCSI writers.

The cdrecord author was using GNU/LINUX, which may be part of the problem.
When I first was looking into this, I received the impression that NetBSD
just worked with IDE CD writers because NetBSD did the ATAPI handling "right".

I had also heard at the time that SCSI was still *preferable* because CDs can
be sensitive to underflowing their buffers as they write, and SCSI made it
easier for the computer to keep data in the buffer. (I have an old SCSI
writer here that never drops below 98% or 95% full when I write. But the
computer doesn't have any other heavy tasks most of the time, the record
speed is low, and the CPU is fairly fast...)
