I get on-pixel characters in menues for certain packages which otherwise
seem to work fine. This is only on one PC and not on another. I already
ran fc-cache as root but it has no effect. 

Font problem happens with:
 1. sodipodi
 2. qcad
 3. bluefish 

Font problem does not happen with:
 1. gimp
 2. mozilla
 3. yudit
 4. gnumeric
 5. abiword 

The symptom is one-pixel dots for chars in pull-down and pop-up
menues only. And fc-cache has already been run. What might I do
about this please.
