I'm getting very frustrated trying to figure out how to update and build 
a current tree.  There are several sets of instructions, all different, 
all of which fail in different ways.  And with all the different 
approaches, it's difficult to determine what anyone actually intends.

Is there any documentation on the build process that matches either 
what's currently available or what's intended?
