We've done this before.  Life is good until you have problems.
Then you have no way to debug.
Can I suggest stuffing a, hmm, serial card in there?
Won't hurt, will help (nothing like debugging from a coredump
if it comes back up).

There are a number of serial LCD's out there than
might be a good thing for you for fun and use.
