Well, back in the day Unix computers (any computers, actually) were big and 
expensive and you tended not to have your own.  Instead everyone used actual 
terminals and connected to the main system either through actual lines 
through the building or by dialing up.  Either way you were going "on line" 
to work.  The documentation might be available in hard copy but normally you 
simply checked them electronically while you were online.
