Personally, I think the OpenBSD==most secure is just hype: most people 
that are familar with both NetBSD and OpenBSD (and aren't Theo puppets) 
will tell you NetBSD is just as secure (perhaps even more so!). Security 
aside, I think NetBSD has other advantages: more ported software, more 
supported platforms, and very helpful users and developers. All it needs 
is a good T-shirt design ~:^]

As someone else mentioned, enabling soft-deps will speed things up. 
FreeBSD just has this enabled by default. There is a simple HowTo in the 
Docs section.

The "Net" refers to how NetBSD is largely developed, debugged and 
distributed: via the "Net"!
