for zone transfers there are currently 2 methods:
AXFR for full zone transfer
IXFR for incremental zone 

as a master, ixfr is chosen for dynamic updated master zones,
as a slave, ixfr by default 

but i see this in bind9, i'm not sure for 8, check in the logs
or in the docs.
