Well, all base sets are just gzipped tar archives, not packages.

So, apart from doing a tar tzvf name_of_archive.tgz, you can watch
what contains base sets in /usr/src/distrib/sets/lists/set_name.

There are many files, some are md, some not. For example, files listed
in /usr/src/distrib/sets/lists/base/mi will always be included in base.tgz,
but md.i386 and rescue.i386 are just included when *building* a release
for the x86 architecture.
