i'm not sure how it is in ksh, but i know in bash, different files are read
if you are using a login shell or not. for example ~/.bash_profile is only
read if you are starting a login shell, whereas ~/.bashrc is read if you are
starting a non-login shell.

as a solution, i just symlink one to the other. perhaps something similiar
is happening with you? X3 could have always started loging shells, X4 does
not. or perhaps some config files changed. anyway, it may be worth a
closer read at ksh manual.

hope this helps,
