   With my DSC P9 I sometimes have the same problem under NetBSD-1.6.
scsibus* at umass? simply doesn't show (though umass at uhub does).
The only workaround for me in this case is to reboot.  The next time,
it usually works.

   It always works for me if the camera is connected (and switched on)
during reboot.
