Ah!  This fixed it.

I assume that I can this to the /etc/ifconfig.pppoe0 file, using the
appropriate address from 0.0.0.0 and 0.0.0.1 (as was used for the
defaultroute setting, per pppoe(4)).  If so, perhaps it should be
mentioned in the man-page?


Well, this is good news.  It means that I am essentially done fiddling
with my gateway and can behead it.  (^&  (Of my systems, the gateway was
the least critical and easiest to revert.  My next goal is to fiddle with
custom kernels to see if I can get around the problem with my laptop's
ethernet under 1.6.  If all goes well, the laptop will be upgrading RSN.
