Thanks.. I was hoping there would be something like that in the default 
install. 

I can't use cdrecord yet since neither the cdrom is working nor the 
network at this point.

Anyidea on why the GENERIC_LAPTOP kernel is not finding the CDROM when the 
laptop-boot kernel finds them OK?
