The sound blaster is a red herring.  What kind of speaker do you
have?  I have Yamaha YST-MS55D, first with 1.5 and lately with
the 1.6 branch.  If you see no reference to uaudio in dmesg,
either you goofed up the kernel config or your device isn't
supported.  Can you post your kernel config?

The following are the only audio-related lines in my config:

# USB audio
uaudio*	at uhub? port ? configuration ?

# Audio support
audio* at uaudio?
