OK, silly to follow up to myself, but I've read the man pages more
carefully, and of course I found the uaudio driver.  Now I just can't
figure out how to get my system to use the new speakers.

I've got the USB speakers plugged in, and I have rebooted.  There is
no info in the dmesg output about uaudio.  There is a sound blaster
family card in the laptop, as you can see from this dmesg output:

  $ /sbin/dmesg |grep audio
  audio0 at sb0: half duplex, mmap, independent

Any ideas appreciated.
