when you say 'no response', do you mean you didn't get a prompt back and
then you ctrl-c'ed it?  It may have been busily running ssh-keygen.
Especially on slower (or even not so terribly slow) machines this can take
quite a while.  Its been a while now, but my recollection was that on one
of my sparcstation 2's, it was minutes.  So you may have just not waited
long enough.  THe good news is you only need to generate they keys once.
