it is only necessary to have X installed if the packages you are installing 
require it.  for example, if you are installing samba or latex,  you do not 
need X.  if you are installing kde3, however, you need the X headers and 
libraries.

nope, the binaries from xfree86.org work just fine.  i've been running them on 
1.5.2, 1.5.3, and -current for several months now
