Actually, you could download a new snapshot from
ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/arch/i386/snapshot

You are correct. There is a script. It is called build.sh.

Download and unpack the sources and read BUILDING in the top level of
the sources. It will explain how to use build.sh.
